At some point in your music production journey, you’re going to want to dive into the universe of royalty free drum sample packs.

Creating your own drum sounds and percussive effects can be an incredibly difficult, tedious task – especially for beginners.

Luckily, there are literally thousands of sample packs containing high quality, professional drum samples, across a huge range of genres and production styles.

Although it has to be said, finding the best sample packs for a specific sound or genre can be a challenge, as some sample packs out there are overpriced with very little sonic variety. Over the years, I’ve downloaded enough royalty free drum sample packs to know which stand out from the rest and which just aren’t worth your time or money.

The Best 808 Drum Sample Packs

1. Wave Alchemy: 808 Drums

“808 Drums” from Wave Alchemy is another sample pack that is sampled and then layered directly from the original Roland TR-808 hardware.

However this royalty free 808 sample pack doesn’t just contain 808 bass drums, it incorporates a range of other drums from the TR-808 such as clap, snare, tom and hi hat samples.

The samples were recorded using a unique, high-end signal chain designed to capture the depth and character of the original machine. Wave Alchemy then added further outboard processing, precision editing and creative sample layering gives the TR-808 samples a modern, unique twist.

Surprisingly, this sample pack is noticeably cheaper than the other packs on this list, even though the sound quality and diversity of the sounds is still top notch.

2. Zenhiser – Universal 808 Kicks

We’ve written about Zenhiser products in the past, and they continue to release superb quality sample packs across a range of genres.

Their “Universal 808 Kicks” sample pack absolutely had to be included on this list for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the sound quality and sonic character of the 808 kicks is sublime. When browsing through the 808s in this sample pack, it is immediately apparent that a lot of care and perfectionism has gone into each sound, and the work has paid off.

The second reason I had to include this part is the incredible variety of 808 sounds. There are sounds in this pack that would be perfect for hip hop, trap, d&b, EDM, house, movie FX and countless other music genres.

This pack contains a whopping 300 bass drum sounds, many sampled directly from the Roland TR-808 and then edited to create new, unique sounds.

Expect to find a diverse range of short, short (layered), medium, long, “falling” and FX 808 sounds in this pack.

If you’re looking for an absolutely massive amount of of 808 loops and one shots for trap or hip hop music, “808 Earthquake” from Big Fish Audio is definitely worth checking out.

The first thing I will say about this pack is it’s expensive. Even with the enormous amount of content you get it’s still expensive. But it’s an ideal pack if you have the money to spend and want the absolute best quality and quantity of 808 drums out there.

808 Earthquake is made in the styles of Murda Beatz, Zaytovan, Araab Muzik and many more of your present day trap producers.

Ambient music is, generally speaking, less focused on rhythmic qualities and more on instrumental archs and landscapes. However, ambient drum sample packs are still an essential part of creating beautiful ambient tracks.

Origin Sounds are one of the most popular curators of chill, downtempo sample packs, and their Ambient Drums & Foley packs are an absolute gem.

“Ambient Toolkit” is another affordable ambient sample pack from Origin Sounds, containing an incredible range of understated percussion and beautiful foley textures.

A huge highlight of this sample pack for me is the amount of unique, weird sounds that you’d struggle to find in other sample packs. The sound quality of the foley loops and atmospheres is also incredible. The only minor downside is this sample pack is it’s a little on the small side, but it’s still a great addition to any ambient producers sonic arsenal.

The Best Drum and Bass Drum Sample Packs

1. Ghost Syndicate – Drum & Bass Bundle

From my experience, drum and bass sample packs containing just drum samples are a bit unreliable. I’ve found the best quality and variety of drums in overall drum and bass sample packs. Although for a very good drum and bass drum sample pack, check out this pack from Prime Loops.

This bundle from Ghost Syndicate is a giant collection of drum and bass drum samples, instrumental sounds, synths, and anything else you’d ever need to create professional drum and bass music. It contains 6 award-winning sample packs: Edge, Enzyme 1 & 2, Hebe, Journey and Basement DnB.

As a bundle, this download covers all bases, regardless of what sub-genre of drum and bass you want to create. Take Edge for example, this pack includes 500MB of dark atmospheric sounds, pounding kick drums, a huge variety of crisp, punchy snares, unique synth sounds and organic percussion loops.

For the amount of samples you get in this download, the value for money is insane. This would be a perfect choice for beginners to drum and bass production, as you’ll be left completely spoilt for choice.

I’ve talked about Zenhiser many times in the past, and I’m a huge fan of their popular Lofi sample packs. Unsurprisingly, their royalty free drum and bass sample pack “Twister” is easily on the same level in terms of sound quality and consistency.

My favourite part of this sample pack is definitely the drum loops. It includes 75 beautifully mixed, full drum loops that span a range of DnB styles. I’d say the theme of this pack is intensity – all the sounds are driving, impactful and will definitely breathe life into your current DnB tracks.

Drumsound and Bassline Smith have released this fantastic royalty free drum and bass pack. “Drum and Bass Studio Technique” contains modern, technical samples while staying true to the classic drum and bass sound.

This pack contains rich, vibrant synths, perfectly mixed drum loops and everything in between. I highly recommend this pack for producers looking to beef up their drum and bass sample collection, especially their drum loop collection.

In my opinion, if you’re looking a incredibly versatile, professional sounding dubstep drum sample pack, this one is a no-brainer. Dubstep Drums 3 is part of Freaky Loop’s highly acclaimed drum sample series, and these dubstep loops are absolutely stunning.

This sample pack contained more than enough driving kicks, massive snares and everything else you’ll need to create devastating dubstep drums. It should be noted this pack only contains loops, so if you’re looking for drum one-shots, there won’t be much in this pack for you.

In contrast to Freaky Loop’s “Dubstep Drums 3” this pack from Zenhiser is focused solely on drums one-shots, with a fantastic selection of impacts and risers for good measure. At just over 300 sounds, this pack contains a fantastic array of sharp, dynamic, beautifully engineered drum sounds.

Additionally, the value for money here is pretty crazy. This dubstep drum sample pack is one of the cheapest packs on this list, yet you are left completely spoilt for choice. Highly recommend.

3. Loopmasters: Dubstep Disruption

Another great solid royalty free dubstep sample pack from Loopmasters . Unlike their “Monster Bass” release, “Dubstep Disruption” focuses primarily on drums, although still provides a decent-sized library of basses, one shots and FX.

The drums, while there aren’t a huge amount, are phenomenal and will provide pounding, head-splitting rhythm to any dubstep track. This is an ideal pack for beginners looking for high quality, inspiring drum loops.

The Best Future Bass Drum Sample Packs

1. Black Octopus – Breathtaking Future Bass

If you’ve delved into the world of EDM / trap / future bass sample packs you may have heard of Black Octopus. Black Octopus have been releasing some of the best, most comprehensive sample packs across a range of electronic genres for years, and the sound quality of their packs is always second to none.

“Breathtaking future bass” is a fantastic sample pack of premium drum samples, arps, basses, chord modulations, and 808’s, with a heavy focus on the drums and percussion. Black Octopus have teamed up with Elliot Berger from Monstercat Records to produce this pack, so as you’d expect – the quality is genuinely insane. Future Drum Alchemy is a future bass drum sample pack containing “lush hi hats, effortless kicks, perfectly pitched percussion, catchy snares, deep fx and a miscellaneous section”.

I’d say the concept of this pack is definitely quality over quantity. There isn’t a huge amount of sample content in this pack, and the value for money here isn’t great. However, in terms of the quality and sonic clarity, this pack is on another level. Future Drum Alchemy is immaculately produced, and will immediately breathe life into your future bass tracks. Definitely worth checking out.

3. Loopmasters – Future Bass Generation

If you’re an absolute beginner to future bass production, it may be a smart move to download an all-encompassing sample pack as opposed to a sample pack focusing on just drums.

“Future Bass Generation” from Loopmasters contains a fantastic variety of sonic elements you’ll need to create professional sounding future bass music. Even elements such as chopped vocal Loops and soft sampler patches are included, which are usually harder to find in sample packs.

The sound quality is also incredible, with particular emphasis on the drum and percussion sounds. We’ve reviewed many official Loopmasters sample packs and they really are the gold standard when it comes to royalty free sample packs. The drums are punchy and immaculately mixed and the synths / pads are bright, spacious and incredibly expressive.

One thing that’s worth mentioning is this sample pack is mainly loops, but does still include one-shots etc.

Famous Audio have released some incredible sample packs over the years, and we’ve had our eyes on them for a while. Recently, they put out this hip hop drum sample pack that contains drum one-shots from a selection of their most popular hip hop packs.

Hip Hop Drum Collection includes 1000 Drum Hits divided into 51 Claps, 175 Closed Hi-hats, 10 Crashes, 234 Kicks, 43 Open Hi-hats, 205 Percussions, 16 Rides, 9 Rims, 23 Shakers and 234 Snares. The variety and diversity of these sounds is incredible giving the relatively low price tag.

This pack contains sounds from Hip Hop Lab, Hip Hop Drums, Intelligent Hip Hop, Futuristic Hip Hop & Experimental Electronica.

I had to include this sample pack in this list as I have found so, so many incredible drum sounds and samples inside. The pack is absolutely enormous, and includes 629 drum samples, 2,101 one-shots and 2,832 Samples, which is insane considering the price isn’t even that high.

This is definitely a great sample pack for someone just starting out in hip hop production, as it contains everything you’d possibly need to get started in almost any sub-genre of hip hop; from smooth, chilled Rhodes-style pianos, to spacey saxophones and flutes, to raw, punchy drum one-shots.

“Complete Drums” is an absolutely gargantuan sample pack for house, Techno, EDM, DnB, Dubstep, Deep House, Trap and pretty much any electronic music genre imaginable. This pack contains a staggering 34,000+ royalty free drum and percussive sounds, giving you everything you could ever need to create electronic beats. I remember downloading this pack and begin absolutely floored by the expansive, meticulously organised samples inside. The sounds are also incredibly professional and have a beautiful sonic clarity that is more or less unmatched in other house/electronic drum sample packs.

Because of the sheer volume of content in this pack, the price is significantly higher than any other product on this list, but if you’ve got the money to spend, this will transform the way you produce electronic music. Here are some official reviews for this pack:

If you don’t have the money to splash out on such a gigantic pack such as Complete Drums, Progressive House Drums may be more up your street. Focused primarily on drum loops, this sample pack contains punchy, energetic beat loops that will add some serious power to your house tracks.

If you’re looking for drum one-shots however, avoid this pack. For example, there are only 10 kicks and 10 claps included. If you are looking for one-shots and individual percussive sounds, save up the money and invest in “Complete Drums“, trust me.

3. Freaky Loops: Ultimate Drum Fills

The energy and complexity that something as simple as a drum fill can bring to a house track cannot be denied. From filtered snare rolls to spacious tom sweeps, a drum fill only lasting a second or two can go a long way to turn a mediocre transition into an intriguing, professional sounding progression.

In this particular sample pack, there is a variety of house fills, from acoustic, raw sounds to complex, glitched, processed sounds and everything in between. It contains 115 128-bpm drum fills, and each one is deep, spacious and beautifully mixed.

The Best Lofi Hip Hop Drum Sample Packs

1. Lofi Breaks 2

There’s a certain dusty, vintage feel to lofi drums, which results in a calming, nostalgic feeling associated with the lofi genre. Lofi Breaks 2 perfects this sound, injecting warmth and old-school texture into the drum samples.

Zenhiser’s release is one of the more popular sample packs for lofi hip hop, and for good reason. At just over 3GB, it has virtually everything you would need to get started and is definitely one of the best packs for versatility. This isn’t just a lofi drum sample pack, but the drum sounds and a definite highlight of this pack.

It contains more than enough dusty drum loops, one shots and jazz-inflected instrumental samples to create hundreds of lofi loops and tracks. This pack is definitely on the pricier side, but in my opinion is well worth the money.

I see this sample pack as a perfect all-rounder for producers looking to get started in lofi hip hop. On top of this, the sound quality is absolutely sublime. Highly recommend.

3. Akira The Don – LoFi Hip Hop

This sample pack is another example of an overall lofi sample collection where the drums are the highlight of the pack. Akira the Don’s “Lofi Hip Hop” is another extremely popular release from Rankin Audio, and is one of my favourite royalty free lofi sample packs.

Imagine sitting on a rooftop at 3AM with your best friends, this pack is full of atmospheres and samples that will easily provide a soundtrack to those moments.

This pack is absolutely huge. At around 6.7GB it’s very easy to get lost in this immersive library of samples. The standout element of this pack is definitely the drums, as it is filled with sleepy, jazzy loops to crisp one-shots. It comes with a fairly high price tag but in my opinion is worth every penny.

The Best Techno Drum Sample Packs

1. Niche Audio – Naked Techno

This royalty free sample pack is mainly focused on professionally curated Maschine / Ableton drum kits. It contains a collection of 15 diverse, beautifully layered kits perfect for any subgenre of techno.

Organised kits often provide fantastic sonic inspiration as they are an extremely quick, simplistic way to create drum beats. The kits included in “Naked Techno” also include atmospheric pads and chords, sub-bass and ethereal FX samples.

If these kits aren’t your thing however, this sample pack contains hundreds of loops and one-shots and even 30 soft sampler presets for a higher level of flexibility. Highly recommend.

2. Techno Drums 5

Techno is widely recognized by it’s pounding 4-on-the-floor kick patterns, repetitive, moody synths and continuous, rolling bass. The genre originated in Detroit with various DJ’s combining synth-pop with house, electro, and funk. Today, techno incorporates substantially darker elements, and is predominantly found in European underground rave culture. Finding the right drums and percussion for your techno music is essential.

Techno Drums 5 from Riemann Kollektion contains techno one-shots mainly created with classic hardware drum machines like the Roland 808 and 909 as well as on a large Eurorack Modular Synth. This is a very small pack, but it clearly focuses on the authenticity and recording quality of each individual sample, giving the best possible audio results. I’d particularly recommend this sample pack for industrial or minimal techno with distorted kicks.

Techno Drum Trax 2 from UNDRGRND is a another small, yet extremely powerful techno drum sample pack. With a total of 93 drum loops, and a modest selection of one-shots, it’s a fantastic addition to any techno producers sample collection.

These techno samples have clearly been treated with a incredible level of detail and perfectionism to achieve such a high level of sonic quality and consistency.

The pack contains 3 custom Ableton Drum Racks in Ableton Project environments. Each comprehensive Drum Rack comes with pre-mapped one-shots and 8 macro controls such as reverb, echo, noise, pitch, filter and delay. In the session view you can quickly jam ideas with laid-out grooves for Intro, Full Beat, Stripped Beat, Breakdown and Drop – all fully customisable in MIDI format.

Again, please consider this is a very small sample pack. But with a very low price tag to match, this one should be a no-brainer.

The Leviathan series is probably one of the most popular, innovative trap sample pack series out there. The third instalment was created by 10 world class sound designers, and the quality of the sounds and presets is simply outstanding.

Every file within this pack has clearly been treated with a level of care of perfectionism that you don’t get with many other sample packs.

The pack is also absolutely huge. It contained nearly 4000 high quality sounds that can be easily inputted into any trap beat, and around 250 unreal Serum presets.

Please note however, for trap in the form of hip hop, this pack may not be as useful. This sample pack is mainly aimed at electronic trap music producers.
