VariSpeed by GSi – A FREE Copicat IC400 Tape Delay Plugin
The WEM Copicat IC400 is a vintage, highly sought-out analog tape delay unit. With its varispeed and repeat controls, you can get a slap back delay or huge, spacious, groovy analogue tape noise. The original unit is known for it’s sonic grunge and rawness, and a pleasing analogue warmth that comes from tape delays.
GSi have released a faithful emulation of the Copicat IC400 tape delay – for free! This plugin is available in VST, VST3, and AU format for PC and Mac (64-bit only).
Visually, this emulation plugin is incredibly true to the original, from each individual control, to the beloved image of a dishevelled cat demanding you clean the unit heads. The tape loop is even animated and responds to the varispeed knob control.
As well as the varispeed knob, the interface features motor speed, repeat rate, swell and an echo tone control. The green, white and red buttons can also be used to toggle the three pickup heads. A bypass is also available with the on/off switch.
Okay, so how does this baby actually sound? This Copicat IC400 Tape Delay emulation is capable of some really warm, authentic analog-esque tones. The sonic diversity of delay effects is also really impressive, from subtle delay to wild, dive-bombing feedback dub effects. Producers looking to add a hypnotic, vintage tone to their tracks will find a lot of value here. If you’re looking for crisper, digital delay, this delay probably isn’t for you (or any tape delay for that matter.)
